La Barcheta sung by Joyce DiDonato.

Venice has enjoyed many tributes in its long, unique and distinguished history and one compliment that I particularly like, is that  “Venice is a Melodie”

Enjoy this beautiful video and be transported into the gentle Venetian breeze by the elegant voice of  Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato singing the wonderful song “La Barcheta”  by French composer Reynaldo Hahn, which evocatively echoes the atmosphere of a Venice of another age and style and the lyrics are written and sung in the Venetian dialect. DiDonato’s interpretation of the song is superbly accompanied by guitarist Simone Vallertonda.
This was part of German TV programme ZDF’s broadcast “The Venice of Donna Leon” May 2013.

Lyrics of “La Barcheta”
La note è bela,
Fa presto, o Nineta,
Andemo in barcheta
I freschi a ciapar!
A Toni g’ho dito
Ch’el felze el ne cava
Per goder sta bava
Che supia dal mar.
Ah!

Che gusto contarsela
Soleti in laguna,
E al chiaro de luna
Sentirse a vogar!
Ti pol de la ventola
Far senza, o mia cara,
Chè zefiri a gara
Te vol sventolar.
Ah!

Se gh’è tra de lori
Chi troppo indiscreto
Volesse da pèto
El velo strapar,
No bada a ste frotole,
Soleti za semo
E Toni el so’ remo
Lè a tento a menar.
Ah!
