"Auld Lang Syne"- A Happy New Year to you all from Scotland and Marbella Marbella
Marbella Marbella, wish you all a very prosperous, healthy and serene New Year by celebrating in traditional Scottish style by singing one of the world’s most renowned tunes, “Auld Lang Syne” written by Robert Burns one of Scotland’s greatest and revered poets and performed live by Andre Rieu and his orchestra.
“Auld Lang Syne” (old long since) is a Scottish poem, though written by Robert Burns (1759-1796), in 1788, a similar poem by Robert Ayton (1570-1638), as well as older folk songs, using the same phrase exist, but may well have inspired Burns. It’s one of the better-known songs in English-speaking countries, and it is often sung at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Day.
“Auld Lang Syne” is usually sung each year at midnight on New Year’s Day (Hogmanay in Scotland) in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong, Anglo areas of India, and Canada, and signifies the start of a new year.
In this article, I would like to take this opportunity to mention a truly Scottish family David, Linda and Samantha Mairs, as this family have been at the forefront of the campaign to improve Marbella and the Costa Del Sol’s image. They supported me at the beginning when I began to put the idea into motion; including the first arrangements and recording of the campaign song “Marbella Marbella” sung first by Alan De Ward and Samantha Mairs produced at the Davlin Studio Fuengirola.
The song received tremendous media coverage including TV and radio and Samantha’s super version even reached as far as Scotland where the Mair’s originate from. So it’s only fitting, that these three Scottish indefatigable workers for charity, (Remember David’s first parachute jump to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research-The Flying Scotsman) should be recognized by our website. http://marbellamarbella.es/2010-06-10/david-mairs-jumps-for-alzheimers-research/
Despite personal obstacles affecting their lives throughout last year, they have doggedly continued to support charitable works and to help me with this worthwhile task of promoting this beautiful part of the world, a cause that should involve all of us on the Costa Del Sol.
David and I completed the final production of the new CD “Livin in the Sun,” a compilation of original songs. 2010 was professionaly satisfying for us as we completed a new song and production for charity, Corazon, which was chosen by the International and UNESCO recognized charity, “The Children For Peace ONLUS Rome” to be used by this effective organization for the benefit of deprived children, led by it’s enterprising President, Debbi Mace and Vice- President Lamia Khashoggi.( Sideshow by Paul Wilcockson). http://marbellamarbella.es/2010-07-23/children-for-peace-latest-corazon-video/
