Julián Muñoz faces another year in prison for neglecting ex-wife
Julián Muñoz, disgraced former mayor of Marbella, is now facing yet another legal challenge. In addition to possible sentences for the ‘caso Minutas’ and ‘Malaya’ scandals, prosecutors are asking a one-year jail term for Muñoz for allegedly neglecting to pay spousal maintenance to his ex-wife, Maria Teresa ZaldÃvar.
The prosecution is also asking for the payment of legal costs and compensation to ZaldÃvar ‘for the monthly unmet maintenance, as well as legal interest’.
Muñoz has been charged with family abandonment under Article 227 of the Penal Code. The trial will begin September 23 with the interrogation of the accused, followed by testimony from ZaldÃvar. Marbella’s Court of Instruction No. 3 has carried out investigations in the case.
The provincial prosecutor’s indictment states, ‘Under the sentence of the court of First Instance No. 2 in Marbella in March 17, 2004, declared in the separation of marriage between Julian Muñoz and MarÃa Teresa GarcÃa ZaldÃvar, Muñoz is obligated to pay his wife alimony in the amount of 1,800 euros per month updatable under the CPI’.
‘Since the date of conviction, the defendant has not satisfied the requirement, although he could have done so’, the statement continues.
Muñoz, his former partner, singer Isabel Pantoja, and ZaldÃvar are also defendants in the Malaya money laundering case. The parties have appealed the order of summary procedure for that trial. Muñoz will face trial for Malaya from July.
