Looking for Cover By Mara Lemanis

Looking for Cover

All night long
the great rocks
big with
sand ice gas
the giant blaze
like supplicants
paying homage
what else
futile to slip
the reins from
that yoked path
their course
secure as serfs
tame as flies
to the ruthless
that keeps them
thralls to that
brute light

The rock I ride
unable to slip
the monster’s pull
its flares
burn crust from
under me
boil clay
till only sand
upholds my weight
I scan the sky
looking for cover
for darkness
to hide me
to keep the erosion
from spilling
my dust
