European endorsement  for Meeli Koiva aka Mery Crystal Ra

The light event “Light in the City” showcase works by European light artists that have been selected by an international group of experts.

Artist Meeli Koiva was amongst   14 European  artists presenting  their work at the European light event “Light in the City”,  Hasselt, Belgium from 17th-19th  October 2013. This was the first in a two  year series, and forms part of an European Union project “Light in the City”. At these gatherings European lighting artists will have the opportunities to exhibit their works and engage with others working in the field internationally.

Meeli fotod 5 juuli 0700(2)The Hasselt lighting event attracted participants from 12 different countries those present included officials, municipal engineers, lighting designers, architects, politicians, lightings artists and ordinary citizens from European cities. The goal is to create via collaboration new highly professional level artistic sculptural light dominants for European cities.

Meeli Kõiva is a pioneer of using these techniques  and has developed the possibilities of combining glass and light to extraordinary pieces of artwork for already more than 30 years. She introduced her highly innovative work of art in Europe and in the USA  for private residences and public buildings   Meeli Kõiva`s many architectural works received top art experts compliments at the conference: “Reactive River” a glass and light sculpture/video  exhibited at the European Parliament main building Brussels, Belgium  (which was created for the Birthday of Estonian Republic), a fibre optic sculpture for the shopping centre Forum in Helsinki and “Feuille Qui Vole”- glass and light sculpture for the Glaston Corporation in Finland.

The programme featured introductions to environmentally friendly urban lighting and visually unique innovative future visions in the European cities. The project was financed by an association Europe for its Citizens.

The light event coincided with the staging of the City`s light festival. One item in the light festival`s programme was a Querilla Lighting Stunt, which was implemented as part of the joint project and involved manually illuminating four locations, masses of spectators were in attendance.
