World Fine Art Professionals and their Key-Pieces, 473 – Hanneke Naterop
Hanneke Naterop recently had an exhibition – together with Marten Hazelaar – in Pulchri entitled ‘Baroque stories in paint and ink’. Both artists have been working together for a while and bring out the best in each other. I spoke with Hanneke (and with Marten, soon to be read) in the Pulchri garden.

She paints many female figures but also rich interiors that blend into the layer of color underneath. Light is central to her work, she says. Hanneke: “For me, light is a sparkle. To make that look good, I have to achieve a balance between the light, the structures and the color. This is how I express happiness and joy. At the same time I try to combine several layers in which the past, present and future can be seen. In addition, there is the play between fantasy and reality. It starts with the idea that we create our own reality. For me, reality is mixed with dreams.”

Past, present and future intertwined
She has the feeling that past, present, and future are intertwined. “In addition, people have the ability to change their reality. That is an inspiration that I want to make visible in my work. That makes it so exciting and surprising.”

What is reality, what is a dream and what is abstraction? That’s what you wonder when you stand in front of a painting by Hanneke Naterop. “It’s not a one-layer story. In a painting I can place my ancestors next to myself. I can also take key figures in history. What would Mati Hari be like today? She came to an unhappy end, mainly due to gossip. Things might have turned out very differently for her in these times.”

Her work consists of many layers. She realizes that she herself is not made of one layer. “My life is constantly evolving. By painting I give it approval and meaning. That is liberating. I had a dark period, about three years ago I consciously started working with color. As a result, I experienced the outside world differently, which caused the darkness to disappear. Fantasy influences reality.”

Does she have a key work?
She has. It is the work with the women with dresses, ‘Ready to shine’. “For this work I conducted technological research into how to create figurative work from abstract work, without painting away the abstract.”

How long has she been an artist?
“Since I was 8. That gained more substance when I went to the Tilburg Academy for Visual Education in Tilburg. I graduated there in 1990. By the way, I only adopted the name ‘artist’ very late. I was always made to believe that becoming an artist was not a realistic choice.”

What is her experience with the art life?
It’s the best job there is, she says. “It’s complicated to keep reinventing yourself. You have to continue without approval from the others.”

Finally, what is her philosophy?
“As an artist you are able to shape your own reality. That applies to all of us. Anyone can do it. It is your own reality. No one can approve or disapprove. It’s a beautiful thing to do. I’m having a lot of fun with it.”
