Looking for Cover By Mara Lemanis
Looking for Cover
All night long
the great rocks
big with
sand ice gas
circled
the giant blaze
like supplicants
courting
paying homage
what else
futile to slip
the reins from
that yoked path
binding
their course
secure as serfs
tame as flies
to the ruthless
weight
that keeps them
thralls to that
brute light
quickening
life
cremating
carbon
The rock I ride
wobbles
shifts
unable to slip
the monster’s pull
its flares
burn crust from
under me
boil clay
till only sand
upholds my weight
I scan the sky
looking for cover
for darkness
to hide me
to keep the erosion
from spilling
my dust
