Don Clarke, The quintessential British Artist!
What can my humble pen write about the Costa del Sol based British artist Don Clarke? Many words have been written about his art by far more qualified writers than I.
Don Clarke for me is the quintessential British artist, his work is mysterious, and leaves me pondering, I love to let my imagination run riot, conjuring up lots of lovely fantasies.
When Don Clarke paints a face, a human face, more often than not a woman’s face, the Mona Lisa come to my mind, all his subjects have a gentle expression waiting beneath their surface, an expression that is ready to be brought forward by the viewer in their own imagination, with the results depending on their mood, this is why you can never tire of Don’s work, its fresh every time you see it.
I have not yet met with Don, I came close this summer when I visited his agent Stephen Howes at Stephens home in Mijas, however my time was short, I had driven down to the coast from visiting family in Seville, and had to return the same day, I have however spoken to Don on the telephone, 5 minutes with him and it feels like you have known him a life time, his soft Brummie accent portrays a gentle shy person, unassuming and careful to listen, and pay attention to my nonsense, he did explain that he is a 24/7 artist, and at that time was on a roll, working with his delightful paintings every hour God sends him.
I asked Don if he could refer me to any written stuff about his life and art, to my surprize 4 days later a beautiful hard back book was delivered to me, entitled “Don Clarke, Memories of a British painter” with a dedication from Don himself, this is the kind of guy Don is, ready to share, and to give.
And Don generously gives through his art, his warmth, personality, and his unbounded imagination flow’s like a river through all his paintings, they are a reflection of this artists life, his loves, and they come from his soul.
Don Clarke is represented by Stephen Howes fine art here in Spain, and by Galerie Utrecht in Holland, he will be showing some of his mastery at the Marbella casino in the coming year.
