Marbella Marbella - Christopher Stone!

Well here I am! My first article for this wonderful web site, thank you Dario, and the rest of the team for the opportunity.

Before I wander off down arts winding road I would like to try and define art, what better place to begin than quotes from well established, or “famous artists”

“Art the product of human creativity”, this we all know, or “The creation of beautiful or significant things”, that’s a bit better, although beautiful does not work for me, art does not need to be beautiful, that would build walls around the subject, and restrict the artist, a better definition would be ” Art is the product of deliberately arranging elements in a way to affect the senses or emotions” much better, we need to get a charge when we look at a piece of art, art must have mystery, it must leave us wondering.

“An artist is somebody who produces things that people do not need to have” this is fantastic, the artist will have his moment of success because someone paid money for something he did not need, that’s the whole point, we can live without art, but what a miserable place we would be in if we did, “An artist cannot fail, it is a success just to be one” wonderful, that means I am  successful.

I can go on and quote a particular favorite of mine sculptor Henry Moore, “There is no retirement for an artist, its your way of living so there is no end to it” I agree with this, I feel that art is a vocation, and many artists that I know continue working into advanced old age, probably because they need the money, however Picasso was drawing in bed the morning he died at 93, and he was definitely not broke, far from it, but then he was Picasso.

Personally I disagree with the idea that the viewer must relate to what he is seeing, why look for his or her reasons?, mostly the artist did what he did for his own personal release, people go to work everyday, very few must explain exactly what they did, and why they did it, but an artist is often obliged to explain, or invent why’s and wherefor’s for his doings.

I cannot name names, but a very famous sculptor, when asked by me “What were you thinking when you produced that piece” he replied, “I wonder how much It will sell for”, down to earth, honest, but impossible to say in public. My own quote is this, ” Love it or hate it, but don’t try to understand it, it just is”

I aim to follow up this piece of nonsense with tongue in cheek interviews with artists living in and around Marbella, plus up to date exhibition announcements, with a bit of international art gossip thrown in. For an idea of which artists I am going to start with please visit, www.stephenhowes.es

All the best.
Chris.
