"All Around My Hat" - Dario's Musical Memory Lane!
The original Chryalis Records Promotional video for Steeleye Spans’s 1975 hit ” All Around My Hat”
The other day, I was looking through some photo albums of my past music and show-business career, and I was reminded of the many famous personalities that I had the good fortune to have worked with, or became friends with during my many years of International Cabaret and theatre performances with my sister, the singer Delia.
When my eye fell upon the photo of a terrific group, that at that time, really impressed me with their original musical ideas, sound, and arrangements. It was a photo of Steeleye Span an English[ folk-rock ] band, formed in 1969 and remain active today.
Delia and I had been invited to perform our genre of music just ahead of the group, at one of their early BBC broadcasts, which I believe was in 1975, that took place at the prestigious Cesar’s Palace cabaret club in Luton England. As I recall, the auditorium was packed with invited guests, media and television crews, and the atmosphere was electric with expectation.
We began to sing and entertain a highly appreciative audience with our individual style of music until Steeleye Span performed one of their most successful hits “All Around My Hat” to arousing applause, but more than that, was the positive effect they had on me as a musician. They deserved the huge international success that followed!
Along with Fairport Convention they are amongst the best known acts of the British folk revival, and were among the most commercially successful, thanks to their hit singles “Gaudete” and “All Around My Hat“. They had 3 top 40 albums. They achieved a certified “gold” record with sales of “All Around My Hat”.
Throughout their long history, Steeleye Span have seen a great many personnel changes but has maintained a strong continuity of tradition. Lead vocalist Maddy Prior was one of the main attractions of the band’s music, being one of a handful of strong-but-melodically-voiced women in rock music in the 1970s.
So as a reminder of this talented group I have placed their promotional video on this site and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did?
