Spain could meet Brazil
European champions Spain have been slotted in Group H at next years FIFA World Cup in South Africa. At the draw held in Cape Town, Spain will be alongside Switzerland, Honduras and Chile in Group H. The draw seems favorable for Spain in the group stage but things could get a little tighter when the round of 16 starts.
Spain will kick off their campaign on June 16 against Switzerland in Durban, followed by Honduras four days later and finally end the group stage against Chile on June 25 in the capital city of Pretoria. Spain had beaten Switzerland 3-0 when they last met in a World cup match in 1994, but had been restricted to a 1-1 draw by Honduras in 1982 while playing at home.
If Spain tops group H and Brazil top Group G, then the two sides would not meet before the finals, provided both teams reach there.
Spain’s best performance at the World Cup came in 1954, when they finished fourth. Since then, the Spanish team has failed to make it past the quarter-finals of the prestigious competition. But, Spain are currently ranked number one in the FIFA rankings and the current European champions, and experts believe that they are one of the sides who are favorites to win next year’s World Cup.
