World Fine Art Professionals and their Key-Pieces, 1 – Justyna Grzebieniowska Justyna Grzebieniowska is from ToruÅ„ in Poland. Dance is the theme of her work. She paints all kinds of dances, but especially tribal dances that originated in Africa and later spread out over the world.

Justyna: ‘Dance and painting are my two passions. In my painting I become choreographer on the canvas. Now I am inspired by African and Cuban dances. I began my new cycle of works by participating in dance workshops lead by Yeni Mollinet who represents Conjunto Folkorico Nacional de Cuba. She was in Poland at a Salsa festival. I made sketches of her dancing, experienced dance myself and then tried to transform all this experience into painting through colour, structure, form and composition.’

Dances of Orishas and the Himba Her dream is to show elements of culture in the dances of Orishas (a spirit or deity in the Yaroba religion, now wide spread in the world, especially in Latin-America), Himba (indigenous people living in northern Namibia) which can disappear in the future.

My paintings become the witness of what is important and what is slowly vanishing in our civilization. The beauty of the dance can last in the painting. This idea encourages me to travel,  follow the dances and continue to search for more inspiration in tribal dances.’

Vibrating with uneven sound Especially rhythm is important, not only in the dances, but also in the paintings. ‘Rhythm, which is record of movement in time, is in my painting a rhythmical cutting of its structure. The line, which is often stretched like a string, sounds, pulsates with its light, it is sometimes quivering, uneven and ragged, it vibrates with uneven sound, it sometimes is audible like a thrill, flickers sometimes a short staccato, sometimes loud and distinctive to produce forte, in some parts of the painting.’

In her new works she tries to change the dance of the figures into the rhythm of forms in the space. Space became an important part of the painting. The background is no more stable, you get the impression that it is seen from the dancer’s position. It seems to wave, swirl and cut the composition.

Asked which of her paintings she considers as her keywork, Justyna says: ‘ I think it is the painting ‘Ada’, which started the whole cycle about rhythm, movement, music and dance in my paintings. The key word is correlation, joining the disciplines together like choreography and painting or music and painting.’

Art lessons at the University Justyna’s art life started in the United States where she went to Junior High School in Lubbock, Texas. There she joined the dance class and started to paint. She went back for High School to Warsaw and there she organized her first exhibition. She knew at that time that she would express her thoughts and emotions by painting.

After High School she studied five years in the painting section of the University of Nicolaus Copernicus in Toruń and she received her diploma in 2000. In 2004 she started teaching art lessons at this university and in 2011 she received her PhD by showing her new works under the title ‘in the rhythm’. She is very happy that through the Linkedin Group Fine Art Professionals, initiated by Ella Arps (more than 23.000 members) she found contact with the Amsterdam Window Gallery and was invited to show her works in Amsterdam. ‘Thanks to that meeting I had the opportunity to exchange thoughts, artistic ideas and to have contact with other artists from all over the world.’
