Marbella to clean up overhead cables and wires

Bid good riddance to sights like this in Marbella.

Wires and cables will soon disappear from the urban landscape of Marbella, according to new regulations governing the aesthetics of the town. The City Council has reached an agreement with Telefonica to begin pulling and cleaning wiring from Monday, May 3rd.

The measure will particularly affect nodes where the largest number of cables are concentrated in the city. The streets of Alderete, Mendoza, Mercy and the Plaza de Altamirano in the old part of town will be the first places to watch the cables disappear.

The aim is “to improve down-town infrastructure and eliminate as many overhead power lines as possible,” according to a statement from the City Council. It is also seen as a response to calls from neighbourhood councils throughout the city, who have said that excessive wiring not only creates an eyesore, but very real dangers. Falling trees, limbs or building debris can cut cables during storms.
