Málaga feels 4.8 earthquake tremors, no damage reported
Many people in Málaga went to bed with a start on Sunday, and not just because they saw their favorite team’s standing in the Spanish League. Lamps moved, and furniture and precious objects slid during an earthquake with an epicentre in the town of Durcal, Granada.
It was felt in Málaga province, as well, especially in Fuengirola and Estepona, and in other localities in Andalucia, including Jerez, Jaén and Cadiz.
The quake, measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, occurred at eight minutes past midnight, according to the National Geographic Institute.
With an origin 610 kilometres below the surface, it was a deep earthquake. Quakes of that depth may be quite weak in their effects, but still felt over a wide area.
Local police sources said they received calls from cities from different parts of Málaga. “Calls came in from Puerto de la Torre, Ciudad Jardín and other city areas. Residents in these neighbourhoods confirmed that they felt the tremor, but we have no evidence that there has been any damage,” a local police spokesman said.
Tremors are quite common in Málaga, but there has not been an earthquake of this magnitude recorded in the region since 12 February 2009. That earthquake, with an epicentre at Cabo San Vicente, had an intensity of 4.0 and was felt in Málaga, Sevilla, Cadiz and Huelva. Some tenants in tall buildings in Madrid reported feeling the brief shaking.
Another earthquake of 4.6 magnitude was recorded in Málaga in July 2009, with an epicentre east of Almogía, according to data from the National Geographical Institute. The quake occurred at 16:15. and did not result in calls to the fire service, health or Guardia Civil.
