A passage in the forest, a summer night
Ernst Kraft’s latest project started with a question: «What happens in the forest after I’m gone? What happens when night falls?»
His purpose was to visualize the wanderings of forest dwellers, capture their movement and record their tracks in relief.
During the international annual land art event in Biel Bienne, Switzerland, Kraft laid out a trail of foam bricks in one of the unbeaten paths in the dense woods of Biel. In the evenings he supplied bread and leftover food on the tracks, and in the mornings he evaluated the traces left behind during the night by birds, snails or a passing stray dog.
It sound like a scientific research, yes, just like the sculpture The house with the two chimneys in Argentina seemed architecture, or his transparent staircases touched industrial design, yet the house was never meant to live in, the stairs will not hold your steps, and on this trail the registration is not the final result, it is rather the way of exploring the edges of conceptual art.
The result, as exhibited on the wall of the Forest Cabin in Biel, is the capture of various movements, a drawing in relieve of a passage in the forest, a summer night…
